Waste-Free Parties

In the fall of 2008 Go Green bought for each class (with Go Green grant money) a party set of plates, cups, knives, forks and spoons to use in class parties and events.

Instead of parents donating disposable plates, cups and flatware, we encourage parents to volunteer to use the party set. This involves taking it home, run used items through the dishwasher and bring it back the next day.

In one year if all classes use the set we save more than 1200 disposable plates!

Here are some ways you can reduce waste at parties...
  • Reducing green (food scrap) waste by separating and putting in green bins near multi-purpose room.
  • Recycling of any bottles, paper or any other recyclable items in the correct bins (many recyclable plastic water bottles will look the exactly the same in 80 years time if left in landfill, avoid this by putting in them in a blue recycling bin).
  • Reduce waste by buying bigger packets of food rather than smaller individually wrapped items.
  • Reduce waste buy buying drinks in large recyclable bottles, rather than disposable individual drink containers
  • Reduce waste when giving gifts -  give teachers gifts in reusable bags rather than using wrapping paper.
  • Avoid non-recyclable items like juice pouches, styrofoam, plastic forks and straws.

Here are some Green party ideas/activities...
  • Instead of cake get cupcakes - the kids don't need plates and the wrapping can go in the green waste - zero landfill waste!
  • Hold a Party Olympics: Set up a series of fun activities including relay races, jump rope and kickball. For treats, hand out organic cookie “medals”
  • Paint some rocks e.g http://crafts.kaboose.com/earth-ladybug-rocks.html
  • Decorating reusable cloth napkins, kids can sign their names on them and draw designs with fabric pens - they can then use them in their pack lunches instead of disposable wipes/napkins.
  • Make paper airplanes out of old magazines or old school notices.
  • Make cootie catchers out of the back of paper that has only been used on one side -kids can fill in their own messages.
  • For the winter holidays make snowflakes out of recycled paper
